the Bradley history…a century in one family
The Bradley was built around1845 when tree-lined Bayshill Road was just being developed with exclusive villa’s on one side and elegant town houses on the other.
The house has been in the family for almost a century now and it has a full family history. In 1918 19 Royal Parade was bought to house widows who had once been wives of officers of the British Army serving in India. Sadly upon the death of their husbands they were often left without any income and had to come back to England in a poorer capacity. 19 Royal Parade was split into flats and over many years women were given a lovely home to reside in.
This philosophy has continued over the years until recently when the house was converted into a luxury Bed and Breakfast. Chris and Sue will be very happy to share further memories of family history, please ask if you are interested further.
The Bradley was named the Bradley because the 2nd owner of the house was a famous Church of England priest. Charles Bradley was famous for his profound sermons and forward thinking, but he also was a member of the Clapham sect and worked with William Wilberforce on the abolition of the slave trade. He lived here with his second wife, the first died after bearing 11 children and went on to have ten more children with Amy, a renowned mountain climber. His children went on to become influential people in their own right, a philosopher, and lecturer at Oxford university and one even became the Dean of Westminster Cathedral in London. And so……The Bradley bed and breakfast was named.
